Arbeitsteilung macht Arbeit berechenbar

Die Arbeit­steilung geht aber nicht nur der Automa­tisierung von Arbeit voraus. Sie ist auch eine zen­trale Grund­lage dafür, den notwendi­gen Arbeit­saufwand berechen­bar zu machen und Arbeit­szeit als eine beliebig kalkulier­bare Große zu ver­ste­hen. So schreibt Mat­teo Pasquinel­li in seinem Buch The Eye of the Mas­ter:

The Bab­bage prin­ci­ple states that the organ­i­sa­tion of a pro­duc­tion process into small tasks (the divi­sion of labour) allows for the cal­cu­la­tion and pre­cise pur­chase of the quan­ti­ty of labour that is nec­es­sary for each task.

Von der Berechen­barkeit ist es dann auch nur ein ganz kurz­er Weg zur Pla­nung und vor allem der Leis­tungskon­trolle der Arbeit. Wieder Pasquinel­li:

Accord­ing to Babbage’s vision, the cal­cu­lat­ing engines were also tools for the mea­sure­ment, dis­ci­plin­ing, and sur­veil­lance of labour– that is, for the ‘intel­li­gence’ of labour, at least in the sense the word still car­ried at the time.
